I am little late with posting about Gerard & his hand accident & surgery. This all happened in July & it's now the end of August, sorry. Gerard was hooftrimming some cows one morning & the grinder kick up for some reason which cut his hand...accident. At first Gerard didn't know he cut his hand cause the grinder handle was suddenly hanging on his overall pocket. Luckily, nothing else was injured. After the grinder stopped that he unplugged quickly the pain & shock set in. We then called the hospital to let them know we would be coming in & what happened. They checked him out & poor G he went through so much while waiting. After the pain medicines he was a tad better. It is hard to see someone endure pain! Gerard's cut was from the middle of hand all the way to the end of middle finger. The doctor was not sure if he had damaged the nerves, tendons & probably needed surgery. He wanted Gerard to see a orthopedic doctor/surgeon. We decided just to drive ourselves & it was faster & okay by the hospital. Arriving at Slagelse Sygehus they checked him in & we waited & waited. It was time for surgery so they wheeled him back. They only numbed his left arm instead of his whole body which was good. Hilda & I waited until he was out & then saw him. Surgery went well & the doctor said,''Gerard was lucky because there was almost not enough skin to sew him up on his hand.'' There was no damage to the nerve, tendon or bone but it was all grazed by the grinder. Lucky for G, he should have feeling & use of hand/finger all again. That was our worry. Gerard really wanted to come home, but he didn't! I was just afraid what if his pain was so bad then we would have to drive so long again back to hospital. It was a good idea he stayed because he woke up several times needing the nurse & his pain medicine was not good enough. The next day was a little better & went to pick him up to come home. G had tons of meds to take especially the antibotics because his hand had been exposed for so long & to fight infections. The first week was pretty tough & had to help him a lot with everything. When this all happend the Tour de France was showing for the month of July & then the Olympics would start. So G got some T.V. time in & with is sleeping partner Lola,ha! Our course, Gerard was tired of watching T.V. & pushing it too much wanting to work. We have been to several doctor appointments & they were all intense. They took his stitches out & was a little painful because of the way his new skin had grown/healed. The last time was just awful & I even screamed a tiny second not meaning too! The nurse was like it's okay, because it was so intense as she is making faces too. The doctor couldn't get them out & pulled & dug....but Gerard took it like a CHAMP for 30 minutes of PAIN! I never experienced anything like that before & thank God it is over with. The orthopedic doctor told G he was a good healer & he has to do some hand therapy.
